COMUNICADO ORIGINAL

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., April 9, 2015 – Members of the Newport Ocean Racing Association announced today that the organization, hosts of the 68th annual Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race, will be collecting donations to benefit a school for autistic children in Ensenada at events leading up to race day.

Asociacion de Integracion y Rehabilitacion de Autistas de Ensenada, A.C., can benefit most from musical instruments, interactive teaching materials and monetary donations, said Director Ruben Lopez Arce.

NOSA members have been reaching out to the autism center for the past year, said Toni Biaunco, who manages the hospitality aspects of the race. “Once you visit, you understand the needs of this center,” she said.

NOSA will supply and staff marked collection baskets in which attendees can leave donations at three events prior to the race; at Balboa Fest April 19 and the American Legion Yacht Club’s Sail Away party April 23. Special to the April 22 Sterling BMW VIP party at the Balboa Bay Resort is a raffle. A two-night stay at the host’s beautifully renovated resort and dinner for four at Canaletto Ristorante Veneto has already been pledged to winners of the drawing.

The school was built on land donated by the government and opened in 1998 thanks to tireless fundraising via raffles, events, and community outreach efforts. Ongoing fundraising provides learning tools for students and continuous staff training. Responsible for 15 students, the full time team is supplemented by volunteers, social service providers and parents.

Lopez Arce said that the school’s mission is to provide high-impact treatment for children and youth with neuro-developmental disorders, to substantially improve their quality of life while advocating for the rights of all those with disabilities.

“People with autism have significant alterations in social interactions, communication and affection,” said Lopez Arce. “They require specialized care for all senses, family, social and environment adaptations in addition to basic education.”

The school’s programs provide custom therapeutic, one-on-one care along with family support to enable students to achieve independence and integration in all areas of life.

NOSA will present the donations to the school following the April 25 wrap up of the race. Almost 200 boats are signed up to participate in the April 24 event off the Balboa Pier.
